ABOUT CHARLOTTE HAINS

Charlotte Hains left the UK for France after deciding she needed a change, taking on the huge project of renovating a house. In the UK her life consisted of getting up, going to work, coming home, going to bed, and just surviving. She now enjoys French life within the community of the village in which she lives, and feels privileged to be part of it. She describes her French neighbours as fantastic, offering her help in every way they can, and says she might have given up long ago if they hadn’t been so understanding.
With her house nearly finished she found herself with long nights and lots of thumb twiddling, reading anything she could get on her iPad. In honesty, she admits it was here that Fifty Shades of Grey caught her eye. Unbeknownst to her, her sister was reading it as well. Her sister thought that, because Charlotte has such a creative side, maybe she’d be able to write a book too. As a joke, Charlotte emailed her sister her stories, also written on her iPad. She researched blogs and BDSM sites on the internet, and so Introducing Charlotte came alive. Before she knew it, Charlotte had over 150,000 words which she’d sent by email in instalments to her sister, and there was more than enough for a book...or maybe even two!

The Queen of All That Dies by Laura Thalassa Review

Title: The Queen of All That Dies
Author: Laura Thalassa

Synopsis:
In the future, the world is at war.
For the last decade, King Lazuli of the Eastern Empire has systematically taken over the world. No one knows much about him other than a series of impossible facts: he cannot die, he has not aged since the conflict began, and he wants to rule the world.
All Serenity Freeman has known is bloodshed. War has taken away her mother, her home, her safety. As the future emissary of the Western United Nations, the last autonomous region of the globe, she is responsible for forging alliances where she can.
Surrender is on the horizon. The king can taste it; Serenity feels it deep within her bones. There is no other option. Now the two must come face to face. For Serenity, that means confronting the man who’s taken everything from her. For the king, it means meeting the one woman he can’t conquer. But when they meet, something happens. Cruelty finds redemption.
Only in war, everything comes with a price. Especially love.

Review:

I absolutely loved this book! I couldn't put it down, and read it in a day. The setting, characters, plot and writing were without a doubt amazing and well thought out. The characters and setting were richly detailed and in depth. I fell in love with Serenity and her tragic life and position. She was a great character,  and had the most difficult life. She deserved so much more than the life she was dealt. But then the book I loved wouldn't exist.

I felt bad for Serenity when she realized she was only included in the treaty meetings to tempt the king. However, I loved that she fell for him in her own way. I even loved the fact that it wasn't a head over heels type of love but a tragic, necessary,  forced , and ultimately consuming love for her. Because this is the man who is ultimately responsible for the pain and suffering inflicted on her. He does redeem himself and it is obvious he loves her for her, not because she is supposed to be forbidden.

King Lazuli was an interesting character.  I'm still not sure if I totally like him yet but I am hopeful that I will like him even more when more books come along. I don't think he is the monster that Serenity has made him in her head but he is no saint either. It's obvious that he has his own issues and motivations and I hope they get explored more in the future book because he still doesn't seem quite 'human' yet.

I thought that the setting for the story was great! Ms. Thalassa did an amazing job in the contrast of the Eastern Empire and the Western United Nations. The differences between the two were so immense you could really see and visualize the economic difference between the two and the personality of the inhabitants of each.

Honestly this book reminded me why I loved dystopian books so much. I would give it five stars any day of the week. I can't wait for next year when the new book comes out!

Her Dark Angel by Felicity Heaton Review

Title: Her Dark Angel
Author: Felicity Heaton
Series: Her Angel

Synopsis:
An angel trapped in Hell for centuries, Apollyon is tired of guarding the Devil. He longs to break free and feel the wind in his feathers, but he cannot leave the endless darkness without permission from above. When he senses someone calling him, he seizes his chance for freedom, but soon discovers the call came from a beautiful woman he has watched over from Hell, a woman who casts a spell on him and awakens the darkest desires of his heart.
Serenity is shocked when a wickedly sensual black-winged angel shows up in her city of Paris claiming that she called him when she was only casting a simple vengeance spell. He’s no other than the angel of death! When the lethally handsome warrior offers to obey her and give her revenge, Serenity can’t resist the temptation, but can she resist the forbidden hungers the dark angel stirs in her?
Intense and passionate, Her Dark Angel is a tale of desire and deepest forbidden love guaranteed to set your heart racing.

Review:
I really liked this book, but it was kind of anticlimatic. The characters were great and well written. I loved Apollyon.  However with that being said, in a fallen angel story line you expect some type of climax, not a fist fight. You expect that ahh moment when they realize what they need to do to redeem themselves or what they have to do to stay with that person they love. This book offered neither.

Please don't misunderstanding me: I liked the book, but I was disappointed.  It was a sweet story that Felicity Heaton had written very well . It was not what I expected it to be and maybe that is my fault.  I will even say that maybe it was a semibad start to what may be a great series.  I won't know until I read another one and I will read another one. I never judge a series based on the first book.

3/5 stars

Branded (Fall of Angels Book 1) by Keary Taylor Review

Title: Branded
Author: Keary Taylor
Series: Fall of Angels, Book One

Synopsis:
Jessica's had the nightmares for as long as she can remember. Nightmares of being judged for people who have died, of being branded by the angels. Her friends and family think she's a crazy because of it all. Yet she carries the mark of the condemned, seared into the back of her neck, and hides it and herself away from the world.
But when two men she can't ignore enter her life everything changes, including the nightmares. The two of them couldn't be more different. She will do anything to be with one of them. Even tell him the truth about angels, why she never sleeps, and the scar on the back of her neck. But one of the two has set events into motion what will pull her toward her own judgment and turn her into the object of her greatest fear.

Review:
Ok, anyone who knows me knows that I absolutely adore angel story lines. I love them, I can't help it! They are some of my favorite reads and take up a lot of space on my TBR.  Every author has a completely different take on them and truthfully they are harder to find than other story lines.

Keary Taylor wove an intriguing story with Jessica, Alex and Cole. I thought the story she told was unique among angel story lines and written very well. I have never read a story quite like this one and it definitely stands out to me. I have already purchased book number 2. Branded really was that good.

I truly felt sorry for Jessica, to be submitted to that kind of torture every time you fall asleep is terrible.  To be held accountable for others actions is an old story and unfortunately she is placed on trial every time she sleeps for someones life can be an eye opener. She is held accountable for both good and bad deeds, regardless of the choices she makes in her own life.  Her relationship with her family is damaged severely because her mother thinks she's crazy and wanted to see her committed. She truly is alone and lives a solitary existence until Alex enters her life. He appears to be her breath of fresh air. Alex tries to understand her and protect her. Suddenly Jessica finds herself not alone. He may not understand her dreams but he attempts to and doesn't make her feel crazy.

Alex was honestly the sweetest character.  I loved him. Here he was going through his own personal tragedy and he acts on the emotional connection he feels with Jessica.  He slowly pulls her into the real world where she starts to come out of her shell and show her true character.  Their love was sweet l and awe inspiring,  and they both took extreme risks to stay together in the end.

Branded is definitely worth the read! I would give it 5 stars any day of the week!  I look forward to the rest of their story!

Hellhound by Rue Volley Review

Title: Hellhound
Author: Rue Volley
Series: Hellhound Series Book 1
Publisher: Hot Ink Press

Synopsis:

Halo Bay has had nothing but bad luck with men her whole life, from a cheating High School boyfriend to the abusive one she just stabbed through the eye. Fatally wounded from her last fight with him, she falls unconscious, only to wake in purgatory with two choices before her. Sew her own eyes and mouth shut and wander around purgatory for an eternity, or, follow an extremely hot man, by the name of Gunner, to Hell. There she will train to be a "Hellhound", a hunter of all things nasty that escape Hell and go topside. Only with this can they try to redeem themselves and possibly gain their freedom. Settling into her new life as a HELLHOUND is almost easier than the amazing love affair just starting to grow between her and Gunner. His inability to open up, and her problems with trust, tend to make things difficult. Not to mention, she has another who admires her, the Prince of Fire himself, Lucifer. Halo becomes frustrated and makes a fatal mistake that could cost her everything.

The only motto a Hellhound has is HUNT. KILL. SURVIVE.

Review:

First of all, let me congratulate the author on the synopsis of this book. It just completely draws you in and really makes you want to read the book. I love the originality of this series and I believe Rue Volley did a heck of a job bringing it to life. Of course, the book is not without it's errors, but it IS the FIRST book in this series.

I loved Halo Bay's character in this book. I loved the strength of her character; she continually fought to hold on to things that make her more 'human' than the rest of the hell hounds. She is fierce, strong, unrelenting and gloriously human underneath it all. In my opinion, when you come across story lines like these the author is all too happy to throw away the characters humanity, trying to make them more fierce to the readers. It's a nice change of pace.

Halo's romantic interest is Gunner who is more haunted than Halo, but he has had a few more years practice at it. Only Gunner takes his haunted personality to a whole different level, never really allowing himself to be truly happy. In his own mind he still has not sacrificed enough to be considered redeemed.

The combination of Gunner and Halo is quite unique. I was afraid that in the end Halo would just look at Gunner with adoration, and maybe a little 'hero worship'. I am glad to see that the author took their relationship to a different place. He did rescue her from Purgatory but it was obvious the sparks were there.

I really enjoyed the other hell hounds. From the vikings to the vampire. They were unique, well planned and executed very well by the author (in my opinion). They were detailed enough to add depth to the story but not detailed enough to take over the entire storyline.

Let me go on record, I LOVED the cover of this book. I saw on Rue Volley's Facebook page that it was changed recently but I still think she should have kept this one. I am super excited to read the rest of the books and I can't wait to get that opportunity.

Welcome Back To LiW!

Due to personal reasons I had no choice but to walk away from the blog for awhile. Sigh. The reasons were extremely unexpected, time consuming and emotional. I am hoping to be able to get back on track here this week. Fantastic, right? So I wanted to straighten some things out here before we get started and start posting!

First of all, if I owe you a review on a book: it will be written and posted in these next two weeks. That includes tour stops that I missed or had incomplete postings for. I deeply apologize from the bottom of my heart to these authors and promoters. It was inexcusable, but please understand these circumstances were out of my control. I look forward to rebuilding our relationships and hope to work with you again in the future.

Please understand that for the next month or so there may be more than one review posted a day until I catch up.
